Few years ago I was asked by a friend if I saw the movie Maleficent. He and his daughter watched it and he thought that I would like it too. I had hundreds of copies of that movie at the shop where I sold DVD's but I failed to see it. I finally had the chance to watch it in Netflix and I am so glad I did.
Maleficent is a beautiful, amazing fairy that acted as leader to all other fairies. She used to be loved and adored by everybody because of her gentleness, her kindness and her being fair to everyone. One day a human being named Stefan crossed her path and they fell in love. He promised to give his true love to Maleficent. But the promise of true love was replaced by betrayal because of the Stefan's hunger for power, popularity and prosperity. He eventually became King Stefan who married Queen Leila. The promised true love hurt, humiliated and almost killed Maleficent. Maleficent became a ruthless, vengeful, dark fairy that everyone in the fairy kingdom despised her. She became the villain in the tale Sleeping Beauty. We hated her for putting the daughter of King Stefan and Queen Leila, Princess Aurora, to sleep when she pricked her finger on the spindle of the spinning wheel. We patiently waited for the prince to wake her up by a true love's kiss - only a true love's kiss would wake her up. Maleficent did not anymore believe there is a true love, because she was betrayed by the person who loved her.
In the story of Maleficent, she became the evil godmother of Aurora. She kept an eye on Aurora to the point that she met with her and made sure she grew up into a beautiful lady that everyone will regret losing. Her plan was to keep her close so her revenge will be perfect. Aurora unknowingly trusted Maleficent and hid her presence from the pixies who were looking after her. Maleficent became fond of Aurora. She regretted that she made the curse when she was still a baby. But even herself cannot put away what was going to happen. When Aurora turned sixteen, as cursed by Maleficent, she fell into a deep sleep that eventually would mean death for her. Maleficent and her right hand searched for the prince Aurora once met. They directed his way to he reach where Aurora was, so he can kiss her and break the curse. When the prince saw Aurora, he kissed her but she did not wake up. Time was running out. Aurora was going to die any minute. Maleficent was so heart-broken. She will lose Aurora who she learned to accept as real god daughter. She was tearfully giving her last words to sleeping Aurora. She was asking for forgiveness for doing this to the innocent child who did her no harm. Asking forgiveness to the girl who grew up "on her watch" and who she cared for so much. She kissed Aurora's forehead as her final goodbye. As she was leaving, Aurora suddenly woke up.
There was no truer love than what Maleficent has for Aurora. It was her kiss that brought her back to life - kiss from a true lover.
Moral of the story. True love can still grow even in the midst of hatred.
